GenRun estimates how long the fuel in your generator will last so you can plan a refill. Everything shown is an estimate rather than a guarantee: fuel condition, cold, altitude and engine wear all change the outcome, so check the tank yourself. Never refuel a running or hot generator. Shut the engine off, let it cool, and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Generators are for outdoor use only. Running one indoors can kill you in minutes. Keep it outside, at least 6 metres (20 feet) from the house, with the exhaust directed away from windows, doors and vents, and never in an attached garage, a breezeway or under a deck, even with the door wide open. Why does the app show fewer hours than the manual?
The manual quotes a runtime measured at one chosen load, with a full tank and a brand new engine. Once the fridge, the furnace fan and a space heater are on the same unit you are in a different situation, and GenRun answers for the load you actually have.
Do I need a sensor, an account or a connection?
None of them. Nothing extra to buy, nothing to sign up for, no network required at any point. That matters in an ice storm, when the internet usually goes out along with the hydro.
Is an attached garage acceptable if the door is open?
No. Carbon monoxide has no smell and can reach a deadly concentration in minutes, and an open garage door will not clear it. Run the generator outside and away from every opening, and keep battery-powered CO alarms working in the house or the cottage.
How do I make the numbers more reliable?
Log your refills. From three real ones onward GenRun uses the measured burn rate of your own unit rather than the published figure. An accurate appliance list, including the surge when a compressor starts, does the rest.
