GenRun estimates how long the fuel in your generator will last so that you can plan a top-up. Everything the app produces is an estimate rather than a promise: fuel condition, weather, altitude and the state of the engine all shift the answer, so check the tank with your own eyes. Never refuel a running or hot generator. Shut the engine down, let it cool, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for your machine. Generators must be run outdoors only. Running one inside can kill you within minutes. Keep it well away from windows, doors and air bricks, and never use it in a garage, porch, conservatory or caravan awning, even with everything wide open. The handbook quotes far more hours than the app does. Which is right?
Both, for different questions. The handbook figure is normally measured at a set fraction of rated output with a full tank and a factory-fresh engine. Once you have a fan heater and a kettle on the same machine you are somewhere else entirely, and GenRun answers for the load you actually have.
Do I need a sensor, an account or a signal?
None of the three. Nothing to buy, nothing to sign up for, no data connection required. Handy on a narrowboat or a remote site where there is no signal to speak of, and during a storm outage when the mast goes down with the mains.
Is it safe to run the genset in the garage with the door open?
It is not. Carbon monoxide has no smell and can reach a lethal concentration in minutes, and an open door will not carry it away. Keep the machine outside and away from any opening, and fit battery-operated CO alarms indoors.
How can I tighten up the estimate?
Log your fill-ups. From three real refuels onwards GenRun uses the measured consumption of your own machine instead of the published figure, and a realistic appliance list, including the surge as a fridge compressor starts, does the rest.
